History of
Montrose Christian School

Montrose Christian School’s origins begin at Montrose Baptist Church in 1959, when MBC moved to its current location.  As the Rockville community quickly grew from a suburban and almost rural community to being enveloped into the burgeoning D.C. metropolis, MBC found itself positioned to reach a much larger community.  Part of the vision that arose from this opportunity included a school that could meet both the educational and spiritual needs of the community.

Under the pastoral leadership of Rev. Robert Crowley, after planting several churches from 1959-66, MBC opened a part-time nursery school in a newly constructed education building in 1968.  That humble effort to reach children grew into a daycare in 1971 that would provide an important service to the community and provide an opportunity to reach others with the Good News of Jesus Christ.  The mission of the Day Care was to “serve as an evangelistic outreach” and to provide a “quality daycare program set in a Christian atmosphere.”  This ministry continues to thrive today as the Montrose Christian Child Development Center.

It was not long before those young children needed a like-minded school.  On April 30, 1977, Montrose Christian School was officially incorporated.  Montrose opened its doors as a kindergarten serving only five children.  A year later, the school expanded, with the addition of grades 1 through 4.  Each year another grade was added until 1981, when the school added both 7th and 8th grade, thereupon adding a grade per year until 1985, when it accommodated grades K-12.  In May 1986, just nine years later, Montrose Christian School celebrated the commencement of its first graduating class of high school students.

From humble beginnings in a small trailer park community outside the nation’s capital, the Lord has richly blessed Montrose Baptist Church and all its ministries, including Montrose Christian School.  In 2007, the Lord brought Dr. Ken Fentress (Ph. D., Johns Hopkins University) to Montrose Baptist Church as Senior Pastor.  And in 2009, Rev. Richard Halloran (Th. M., Dallas Theological Seminary) answered the call to serve as Head of School for Montrose Christian School.  Together they share a vision to shape MCS students with a Christian worldview for the glory of Christ our Savior, the growth of each student and the good of the community.  Today, Montrose Christian School looks forward to partnering with parents to educate children with excellence as we grow in the future.  Fulfilling God’s call upon the church to reach all peoples with the Good News of Jesus Christ (Matthew 28:18-20), Montrose Christian School will strive toward our goal to impact the world, one student at a time through faithfulness to the Word of God and pursuing excellence in all that we are and all that we do.
